MCRI strengthens Title IX

In Michigan AFL-CIO President Mark Gaffney’s recent column, fairness wasn’t at issue. Truth was at issue. Gaffney falsely implies that the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative would affect advances made by women under Title IX, a comprehensive federal law banning sex discrimination in public education. In fact, the MCRI strengthens Title IX by prohibiting Michigan from granting preferences to any person based on gender, race, color or ethnicity.

Given that more women than men are pursuing higher education and becoming the majority on campuses throughout the state and the country, Gaffney should ask how long before administrators start tweaking the enrollment process to increase the number of men on campus.
