When an Idol can't read - 10/12/05

In a recent article on illiteracy ("When an Idol can't read"), a local elementary school administrator said it's easy for students to "get by without schools detecting their reading problems." Any school unable to detect illiteracy is unfit to educate children. Claiming these children are "overlooked" grossly understates a massive failure committed by the public education system in this state. According to this administrator, students "slip through" by scamming and making excuses. How pathetic is a system that can be easily scammed by kids and accepts their excuses?
