Students Would Benefit If Schools Spend Wisely - 2/14/05
The Detroit News advocates the consolidation of school districts to save money (“Students Would Benefit If Schools Spend Wisely”, 2/13/05). As a general rule, centralizing government power is a bad idea. Districts should divest themselves of power and give schools flexibility in catering to individual students.
However, if the goal is simply to create greater economies of scale, I propose the United States Public School District (USPS). All purchasing, hiring, and curriculum management can be centralized nationally to create massive efficiencies. The USPS could be a model of effectiveness.
Oh wait. We can't use USPS. That's already taken by another example of government cost-savings and efficiencies – the United States Postal Service.
