Team picked to aid Detroit schools
Governor Jennifer Granholm and Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's 120-member Detroit Public Schools Transition Team is too small and does not adequately represent the district. To rightfully serve the needs of the students, the team needs to be expanded to 144,000 members and include everyone enrolled. Each student should be handed a voucher and told they are free to choose which school they wish to attend. Empowered with this freedom, the students and their parents would decide which schools stay open and where cuts need to be made. Instead of a bloated, unwieldy team of community "leaders", a free market in education would grant the most affected a commanding and decisive voice.
