More lies from One United Michigan
Contrary to the claims of its opponents, Proposal 2 would not eliminate programs that encourage girls and minorities to enter math and science. In California where a similar proposal was passed 10 years ago, these types of programs still exist. According to the University of California website, MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) is “one of the country's oldest and best-known programs that assists students to become highly trained technological professionals” and has helped over 30,000 disadvantaged students. Also, UC’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE) conducts programs such as Girl Scout Day to expose the world of engineering to K - 12 grade girls. These are just two of several outreach programs maintained by UC.
In addition, the claims about fair housing and loan programs are blatantly false. Proposal 2 applies only to public education, public employment, and public contracting. A simple web search reveals fair housing programs in Riverside Country and the city of San Jose.
The opposition has been promoting false claims about the effects of Proposal 2 to scare voters. Fortunately, the power of the Internet allows anyone with access to expose the lies.
Proposal 2 fulfills the promise of the Civil Rights Act – equal treatment without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, or national origin. If you oppose discrimination, vote Yes on Proposal 2.
