Intelligent design shouldn't be taught as fact, students need opportunity to learn all ideas

The intelligent design debate reveals another reason why government-run schools are a bad idea. Countless hours and dollars have been wasted as opposing groups face off on another issue. Intelligent design, sex education, prayer in school, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance are just a few of the issues consuming valuable resources as they are endlessly debated.

Each side tries to force their agenda on the other; opposing the use of their tax dollars for curricula or activities counter to their beliefs. When one side carries the day, anger and resentment linger. If a compromise results, students can end up with a watered-down education.

What to do? Unfortunately no single solution exists, but expanding choice is a step in the right direction. Create more opportunities by increasing the number of charter schools and implementing vouchers. With more choices, parents can find the schools that reflect their values rather than those of the dominant special interest groups.
