Spectators want civility - 12/09/04
While the Palace brawl was shameful and indicative of a decline in civility, the aftermath is proving more disgusting. With the exception of Piston Ben Wallace, the people involved appear unwilling to acknowledge their responsibility and maturely accept their punishment. I hear the initial instigator, John Green, and his lawyer on the talk show circuit blaming Ron Artest for provoking the incident and accusing Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca of "picking on the little guy."
Meanwhile, the Pacer players and team management continue to mix up the definitions of self-defense and retaliation. I'm appalled that the Pacers' front office refuses to support NBA commissioner David Stern's harsh, but necessary, actions designed to prevent future player-fan altercations.
How refreshing it would be to hear the fans and players say "I was wrong. I broke the rules. I crossed the line. I'm sorry and I accept my punishment." Now that would truly be a fantasy sports league.
